Day 25

Day 25

August 3rd 2024

The first Saturday of every month is National Play Outside Day. This National Day presents opportunity to remind everyone to get outside and enjoy the fresh air through play.

Today we are highlighting the playground at the School for the Blind.  This Outdoor Recreational and Learning Park was made possible through the generous support of the SC Lions Clubs District 32A and the Lions Club International Foundation.  This project was the SC Lions Clubs Centennial Project with 60 Clubs, 35 individual Lions, 3 Foundations, 2 community members and the Lions Club International Foundation contributing.   Fundraising for the project began in 2016 and the ribbon cutting for the new playground was held on October 3, 2017.

The Outdoor Recreational and Learning Park includes the main playground area that is completely handicap accessible; an amphitheater area to provide the opportunity for an outdoor classroom and a space for outdoor performances; a freestanding play area with boulders, merry-go-round, and rockin robin to provide an area for our students to be social; a musical area with large musical instruments; a butterfly sensory garden; and learning stations including a bank and a grocery store.  In addition to offering a safe place for our students to play, this playground offers our students an area to learn in a less structured environment than in the classroom.

The picture on the previous page has three students on a round swing on the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony.  The picture at the top has four students on the merry-go-round on the day of the ribbon cutting ceremony.
